Columbia School District seeks road closure

Columbia School District Superintendent Jason Harris requested and received approval to temporarily close a portion of Pearl Street at the Columbia board of Aldermen meeting Aug. 17. The temporary approval is only until a hearing is held to close it permanently because of heavy damage.

Two more indicted in sex sting

The January 2021 sex sting “Operation Sparrow” has netted two more indictments this past week. The initial sting yielded 10 arrests, and some have already been indicted in the matter.

More than 100 people with more than 50 4-wheelers and side-by-sides drive up Pickwick Road near the intersection of Mt. Carmel Church Road in Foxworth on Sunday. The riders were taking part in Miles for Mia in remembrance of Mia Trujillo who died after being struck by an alleged drunk driver while riding a 4-wheeler at her home on Pickwick Road. Once the riders turned onto Mt. Carmel Church Road, they stopped at Trujillo’s grave site, where different people spoke and there was a balloon release.

Ride honors the late Mia Trujillo

Sunday afternoon in the little community of Cheraw, there was a large gathering of people from all walks of life. All were there for one simple reason, to remember the name of Mia Trujillo, a teenager who died after being struck by an alleged drunk driver July 12.

Engineer Jeff Dungan, standing, goes over a map of the land where the SportsPlex will be built with the City Board of Aldermen on Aug. 17. The board approved, upon his recommendation, clearing and grubbing of seven acres and cleaning the underbrush of 12 acres on the west side of the SportsPlex site.

Board approves work for SportsPlex

The Columbia Board of Aldermen approved two separate bids to do some clearing and grubbing for four different sections and another for the clearing of underbrush in another area along RA Johnson Drive for the proposed SportsPlex.
