WME celebrates breast cancer awareness

Since October has been designated nationally as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, there has been no shortage of local observance, support and special tributes to cancer survivors, those still undergoing treatment and in honor of those who have lost their battle with the deadly disease.

What might appear to be an authentic European village teeming with activity, photos above and below, is really the result of the extraordinary talents of Mario Hoffmann of Columbia. A native of East Germany, Hoffmann immigrated to Mississippi in 1995 and possesses a unique skill set in constructing handmade miniature landscapes and cities, complete with a fully-functional multiple-track railway system through the entire exhibit. Hoffman created the miniature-scale, but extraordinarily realistic, alpine village during the past 13 months. What appears to be just an average backyard shed is actually the workshop of a Columbia man who has the unique talents and skills to make some of the most remarkable miniature-scale creations of villages, cities and landscapes, complete with a fully-functional 12-volt railroad system.

When Olivia Fortenberry isn't hard at work improving the lives of local children through her skills and training as a speech and language pathologist, she's often volunteering for one of many Junior Auxiliary projects or spending time with family.
