Marion County Sheriff's deputies were conducting a safety checkpoint at the intersection of Kokomo Road and Old Mississippi 24 Friday shortly after midnight when Ronnie Smith, 42, of Tylertown approached the checkpoint on a homemade scooter then attempted to flee.
