City planning to take back over garbage

Columbia aldermen are moving forward with plans to take back over the city’s garbage pickup after the contract with Waste Pro expires Sept. 30.

Alderman Jason Stringer has been researching specs for buying garbage trucks and brought his recommendations back to the board Tuesday. They approved taking bids based on those specs.

Diners spot burning utility pole before outage

Crews were working to restore power – and diners eating by candlelight at nearby Rajun Cajun’s – after a transformer apparently blew tonight at the intersection of U.S. 98 and Mississippi 13.

The Pearl River Valley Electric Power Association had four bucket trucks on the scene. Power was out in the shopping center to the south off 13.

Career fair draws more than 600 students

Organizers said the second annual career fair at Columbia High School proved a big success, drawing 52 businesses and more than 600 students.

The event was held Feb. 26 at the Charles Boston Sports Complex and included students from CHS, Columbia Academy, West Marion, East Marion and Tylertown.
