Embezzlement charges lead recent CPD cases

The Columbia Police Department has been busy throughout February handling a number of felony cases, including one where a Columbia woman has been charged with two counts of embezzlement for allegedly stealing nearly $30,000 from her place of business.

Luter’s manslaughter appeal denied by state

Kimberly Luter, who was sentenced to 15 years in prison with five years suspended for manslaughter in the shooting death of 10-year-old RaLajah James on Jan. 14, 2021, had her appeal denied by the Mississippi Court of Appeals last week.

Beets named Junior Auxiliary Citizen of the Year

When Billie Beets attended the Junior Auxiliary of Columbia Charity Ball, she had no idea she would be the one leaving the National Guard Armory with the coveted blue and white striped flag as the JA Citizen of the Year.
Not only was she shocked that she won the award, Beets said she had no clue she was even being considered.
