Experience Columbia, which has turned downtown into a winter wonderland the past few years, has been granted a release from its contract with the City of Columbia by the Board of Aldermen.
Experience Columbia asked the City on Monday in a letter to dissolve its contract, which had one season left, and the Board granted it unanimously Tuesday evening.
Experience Columbia has been under extreme financial strain because of inflation and the taxes and tariffs in place to store and transport its materials, leading to the request.
Mayor Justin McKenzie said he hopes there will still be something going on downtown this winter, but those decisions have yet to be made.
With a skating rink as the main attraction, Experience Columbia has made downtown a destination for people throughout the state and the south.
More details will be released Wednesday.
