A 21-year-old Columbia man who served in the military and was a local volunteer firefighter and proclaimed minister was sentenced to four years in prison last week for the statutory rape of a 14-year-old. Kameron Virgil was sentenced to five years total, four to serve day for day, and must register as a sex offender.
Virgil was arrested by the Columbia Police Department May 17, 2024, for statutory rape, then again on June 24, 2024 for statutory rape and sexual battery for a second victim. He was 19 at the time of both offenses in June 2023.
Virgil served in the Army National Guard, as a firefighter with the Foxworth Volunteer Fire Department and as a proclaimed minister.
The CPD said that Virgil’s crimes were particularly concerning considering Virgil held “multiple positions of trust” within the community.
“The Columbia Police Department remains steadfast in its commitment to upholding the law and ensuring justice in cases of sexual assault,” a June 2024 press release stated. “The department's Major Crime Bureau's unwavering dedication and expertise in investigating such offenses underscore our resolute determination to safeguard our community and protect our children while holding offenders accountable.”
District Attorney Hal Kittrell said the second case can still be prosecuted and that his office is working with the CPD on it.
