The final touches of the new state-of-the-art playground at Friendship Park are currently being held up by the cold and wet weather. It could be completed later this month or next.
Mayor Justin McKenzie said that the subcontractor explained that the rubber surfacing requires temperatures of no lower than 56 degrees and rising as well as dry forecasts.
“We have the pretty week — we just don’t have the temperatures,” McKenzie said Tuesday. “If it’s too cold when they are installing the (rubber surface), the material will go dormant and never set up like it’s supposed to.”
Current weather projections from The Weather Channel predict it will be at least two weeks before Columbia’s temperatures will rise high enough for the rubber surface to be installed.
The perimeter fence for the playground has been approved and awarded to Martin Fence Company of Foxworth.
All of the playground equipment has been installed, and all of the dirt work and concrete has been completed.
