The Columbia Police Department has 39-year-old Calvin DeShawn Lewis in custody after he led police on a high-speed chase from Church Street into Lamar County and sparked a manhunt after he fled on foot.
The CPD, along with several other law enforcement agencies, searched for the Columbia man for nearly three hours in the woods before finding and arresting him.
Law enforcement deployed a spike strip that caused Lewis to lose control of his vehicle and crash on U.S. 98 in the Bellevue community near Cole Road. Lewis then allegedly fled from his vehicle and escaped into the woods, where police are actively searching for him.
Lewis was wanted for multiple felony charges, including burglary and elderly abuse. Columbia Police Chief Michael Kelly and Det. Micheal Turner said he will also be charged with felony eluding and other charges based on “his reckless actions today.”
The CPD was assisted by the Lamar County Sheriff’s Office, Marion County Sheriff’s Office and Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics.
The Columbian-Progress will continue to update this story as more information is made available.
