The Marion County Board of Supervisors opened bids Monday for two projects intended to improve buildings at the BusinessPlex.
T.L. Wallace Construction Inc. made the low bid of $132,352 for a miscellaneous improvements project at the former Columbia Training School. Sullivan Enterprises bid $168,723.
The project will entail improvements to the parking area of the Community Room. The lot will be graded and gravel and rocks will be added. Improvements will also be made to make the Community Room handicapped accessible and repairing the eaves on the outside. Improvements will also be made to the field where the Pee-Wee football players practice.
The board also opened the following bids for re-roofing the maintenance building at the BusinessPlex.
• R&R Roofing and Sheet Metal Inc. $75,000;
• Rowell Roofing Inc. $80,700;
• E. Cornell Malone Corporation $88.800;
• Norman Enterprises Inc. $102,465;
• TLW Inc. $108,732.
The board took all the bids under advisement. The bids will be reviewed by County Engineer Jeff Dungan. After the review of the bids by Dungan, he will report his recommendations to the board.
Funding for these projects will come from the $500,000 appropriation the state allocated from the BP oil spill fund for the Marion County BusinessPlex.
Also, Eddie Ray Breakfield, chairman of the Marion County Railroad Authority, discussed an advertisement for bids for a 10.08 acre parcel near Goss. Breakfield said there was a mapping error and the Railroad Authority does not own the land. Jimmy Manton is the owner and has been paying taxes on it.
“I have met with Jimmy Manton. I apologized from all of us for any inconvenience,” Breakfield said to the board.
Breakfield said Manton was satisfied the mix-up had been straightened out. The bidding for the land was opened until 1:30 p.m. on Monday, and no bids were submitted.
The next board meeting will be July 1.
