A Columbia man was killed in a single-vehicle crash Tuesday afternoon on Columbia-Purvis Road.
Hubert Leroy Powell, 73, died in the crash according to Marion County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Pete Williams.
“At 3:49 p.m. Tuesday deputies responded to a single-vehicle crash on Columbia-Purvis Road near Loftin Road,” he said. “The vehicle had been traveling southbound on Columbia-Purvis Road and left the roadway striking an embankment. Mr. Powell was thrown from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing a seatbelt.”
Firefighters from South Marion, Pine Burr and Foxworth assisted AAA Ambulance Service assisted at the scene. Marion County Coroner Norma Williamson was also called to the scene and investigators and deputies from the MCSO worked the crash and took the report.
Williams said investigators are working to determine the cause.
“Witnesses were behind him and said he swerved side to side,” he said. “He then accelerated and they lost sight of him. They came around the curve and saw his vehicle in the woods. We’re not sure if some sort of medical emergency was going on.”
