Two losses to Lincoln County led to elimination of the Duckworth 12U all-stars from the state tournament, but their head coach says he’s proud of their effort and third-place finish.
The Columbia team competed in the Mississippi Dixie Youth Majors in Brookhaven over the weekend.
On Friday night, Duckworth dropped the opening game to Lincoln County 12-2, but it bounced back Saturday with an 11-8 win over Walthall County and an 11-1 victory over Humphreys County.
Its final game was an 11-1 loss to Lincoln County on Sunday.
“We ended up coming in third in the state,” Coach Randy Medious said. “I’m really proud of them.”
He said Lincon County was simply a good team.
“We lost each time to them by 10 runs. They were just fundamental; they played well,” he said. “We made a lot of simple errors. We were excited early.”
However, Medious was pleased with the team’s performance on Saturday with the pair of wins.
“We hit really well Saturday,” he said. “We had several inside-the-park home runs. We also got great pitching Saturday. Walthall County scored their runs off some errors. I think we had some nerves going into the game because it was the state tournament. We gave up the runs early but didn’t give up any more after the second inning.”
Members of the team include Jacob Johnson, Jeremiah Foxworth, John Johnson, DiAndre Bridges, Ladaneion Harvey, Taviyun Johnson, Ethan Morris, Kendell Peters, Amarion Fortenberry, Alex Miller, Nehemiah Cain and Mashun Anderson.
