The Columbia 12u boys fought hard but came up just short at the state tournament in Brookhaven this weekend.
Down 4-1 Sunday in the final against Lincoln County, the all-stars battled back. They trailed by three in the bottom of the sixth, head coach Martin Prejean said, and got a bases-loaded hit to get within one. But that last run proved elusive, and they closed their season.
“It was a nail-biter that came down to that last at bat,” Prejean said. “It was a good season. They put up a hard fight. We scrapped. They definitely fought to the end.”
Landon McNabb knocked six hits at the state tournament, leading the team in batting average, and Prejean said Zach Lowery really did a great job as the squad’s primary catcher.
The team opened with a win Friday over West Jasper and then defeated Kosciusko. Saturday evening they faced Lincoln County the first time and lost by four runs.
They pulled out a win Sunday over Cleveland with their season on the line, setting up the rematch that they ultimately lost to Lincoln County.
Even though the season didn’t end the way they wanted, Prejean said it was a positive effort and all the boys hustled and played hard.
