The strength of the faculty at Columbia School District lies in their deep commitment to student success, both academically and personally. The CSD is dedicated to offering solid academic programs with six areas of acute focus:
- Educating the whole child
- Providing a talented and caring faculty
- Prioritizing a safe learning environment
- Offering a wide range of extracurricular activities
- Engaging with families and the community
- Providing college and career readiness
As Superintendent of Columbia School District, Dr. Jason Q. Harris focuses on continuing student achievement and community engagement and providing new social-emotional learning initiatives to support student well-being.
"Parents want to send their child to Columbia School District (CSD) because it offers a holistic, high-quality education in a supportive and dynamic environment," says Dr. Harris
Dr. Harris further elaborates on these areas of focus that set the high standard of education in the CSD through their commitment to academic excellence, rigorous curricula, advanced placement courses, and various learning opportunities that challenge students to reach their full potential.
The district provides personalized learning experiences, utilizing technology and innovative teaching methods to meet the needs of every learner. The CSD recognizes the importance of developing students' academic skills, character, leadership, and social-emotional well-being. With programs fostering critical thinking, resilience, and collaboration, students are well-prepared for future college, career, and life success.
The faculty at CSD are deeply dedicated to the success of each student. Teachers and staff work closely with students, building meaningful relationships and providing personalized support to help them thrive. The district's educators are highly skilled and continuously engage in professional development to stay on the cutting edge of education.
The CSD prioritizes creating a safe, inclusive, and nurturing environment where every student feels valued. The district is committed to ensuring that all students—regardless of background or ability—have access to the resources and support they need.
With a wide range of extracurricular activities, including athletics, arts, clubs, and leadership opportunities, students can pursue their interests outside the classroom. CSD strongly emphasizes family and community involvement. Parents are seen as partners in the educational process, and the district fosters open communication and collaboration with families. The schools are deeply embedded in the community, offering a sense of belonging and shared purpose.
The district provides numerous pathways for students to prepare for the future, including career and technical education (CTE) programs, dual enrollment opportunities, and partnerships with local businesses and higher education institutions.
Excitement and innovative learning abound at each of the four schools that make up the CSD. At Columbia Primary School, each year begins with a theme leading the youngest learners on their educational journey. Led by Principal Ashley Haddox and Assistant Principal Heather Martin, the students walk daily into a vibrant learning environment with the theme "Camp CPS, Where Adventure Awaits!" The seasoned faculty collaborates well with newer educators with a shared passion for igniting the love of learning in students from K-4 to second grade.
"We are always growing and adapting to meet students where they are at CPS. Whether it's STEM, reading, or the arts, we encourage hands-on learning and interaction with teachers and fellow students throughout the day, which develops social skills along with academic growth," said Principal Haddox.
Dr. Jay Rayborn, Principal at Columbia Elementary School, believes grades 3-5 are essential in a young person's life, especially academically. Along with Assistant Principal Julia Foxworth, they praise the excellent staff at CES as a perfect teacher collection of energy and experience. This relational approach to education has served the students of Columbia Elementary well. The CES motto for the 24-25 school year is "We Before Me' which encourages students to think about and care for others and enable them to become the absolute best version of themselves.
"As principal, I wholeheartedly believe in Columbia Elementary School. I was here as a student, spent 8 years here as a teacher, and now I serve in a leadership capacity. As a parent, I also chose to send my children to CES. It is no wonder that CES has continually been an "A" rated school!" said Dr. Rayborn.
Jefferson Middle School Principal Leslie Campbell and Assistant Principal Jamie Powell have a strong sense of the mindset of middle school students in grades 6-8. They strive to create a positive space for students to grow academically and socially. They focus on the importance of social and emotional learning, giving students the tools to be intellectually prepared with the life skills required to advance to high school and beyond.
"Students are introduced to sports and extracurricular activities at JMS. We are a student-centered environment that encourages independence and growth while building strong relationships with our compassionate faculty," said Principal Campbell. ACT prep also starts at the middle school, which provides a strong foundation for future success.
Students from kindergarten forward look to the day they can walk the halls of Columbia High School. Under the leadership of Principal L.V. McNeal and Assistant Principal Melissa Jordan, students at CHS find themselves in an environment where they can thrive and develop into the leaders and productive citizens of tomorrow.
"We are the whole package at CHS. What makes us different is that we are successful across all facets of student life, from academics to athletics to arts. We have a very involved student population," said Principal McNeal.
Principal McNeal notes that over 90% of sports teams make playoffs, membership in the ACT 29+ Club is increasing, and the arts programs are outstanding. The number of students participating in AP courses and dual enrollment classes is growing as CHS is committed to preparing students to prosper during their high school years and after graduation.
CSD is proud of its athletic facilities, like Gardner Stadium and Walter Payton Field, Billy Rawls Field, and John Sapen Field, which enhance school spirit and community pride. Dr. Harris is excited about ongoing capital improvements enhancing academics and extracurriculars. He aims to continue emphasizing collaboration between staff, students, and families to create a more connected and vibrant school environment. Overall, CSD offers a balanced approach to education — where academic rigor, personal development, and community involvement come together to create an enriching and supportive learning environment.
Dr. Harris states, "As Superintendent, my vision for the future of Columbia School District (CSD) is to build a culture of excellence where every student has the knowledge, skills, and character to succeed in an ever-changing world. This vision is rooted in providing a high-quality education that meets the diverse needs of all learners, fostering innovation, and strengthening partnerships with families and the community.
