A Saturday evening shooting in Foxworth that claimed the life of Shanetra Batie was conducted by her husband, Christever Batie, a registered sex offender. Christever Batie remains in critical condition following a self-inflicted gunshot wound. An 8-year-old child was present during the shooting but ran from the scene unharmed.
Christever Batie, 31, of Kokomo has been charged with murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. However, he remains in custody at an unspecified hospital while in critical condition. The sheriff’s office reported Tuesday that he has been charged with felonies previously and is a registered sex offender.
The shooting took place at the intersection of Mississippi 586 and Taylor Cutoff. Christever Batie shot and killed Shanetra Batie, 35, of Purvis then attempted to take his own life.
While the suspect suffered life-threatening injuries from the self-inflicted gunshot, he drove away from the scene to Christian Hill Church on Water Valley Road. The suspect’s vehicle was found behind the church by deputies of the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, who, with the assistance of Columbia Police officers, located the suspect in the woods.
He was taken into custody without further incident and transferred to the hospital.
The investigation is ongoing, and The Columbian-Progress will continue to provide updates once more information is available.
