The Pearl River continued its slow but steady ascent this week and is predicted to crest some 8.5 feet above flood levels today.
By Thursday afternoon the river had reached nearly 24 feet. At the beginning of the week it was predicted to crest at 24 feet and has since changed multiple times to the latest as of press time being 25.5 feet. Flood level is 17 feet with 26 feet being classified as a "major" flood. The last time waters reached this high in Columbia was 1983, and the all-time recorded high is 27.8 in 1979.
All over the county low lying lands and roads are becoming covered by the flood water. Mississippi 587 was closed Thursday between Foxworth and Morgantown. Old Mississippi 35 South, Henry Road, Camp Lane and Whistle Road are also closed due to flood waters.
A medical call in Morgantown Thursday afternoon was hindered as the water over 587 prevented an ambulance from getting there. Medical personnel were able to reach the victim by a high-water vehicle, but the victim chose not to go to the hospital.
Driving along Mississippi 35 North between U.S. 98 and the Columbia city limits, water had gathered going back from the roads nearly as far as the eye can see.
Mayor Justin McKenzie said Thursday the police department will be going to houses in low-lying areas, such as Horseshoe Bend Drive, Jones Lane and Jones Lane Circle, making sure residents are prepared in case the floodwaters reach them.
Thursday Emergency Management Director Aaron Greer met with Sheriff Berkley Hall, Chief Deputy Jamie Singley, Investigator Pete Williams and a member of the Mississippi Department of Wildlife and Fisheries to discuss the current situation.
At 25.5 feet it is expected that flooding will happen near the Columbia Water Park and along Dean Griner Drive and Washington Street. As of Thursday water had begun to cover Dean Griner Drive.
Flooding could also happen on Old Foxworth Road, South Frontage Road and South High School Avenue from U.S. 98 to Lumberton Road, according the Marion County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page.

Sandbags are available at the Civil Defense building and also at District 3 county barn in Foxworth on Mississippi 586 near West Marion High School.
