The Columbia Board of Aldermen will begin considering appointing a new school board member after David McCance resigned, citing a busy work and travel schedule.
The travel nurse submitted a letter to Columbia School District Superintendent Jason Harris and notified Mayor Justin KcKenzie of his intent. The Board of Alderman appoints the position held by McCance and chose the former alderman when longtime school board member Vernon Curtis resigned in 2012.
“I had a conversation with him and it’s just that his work schedule has gotten where he can’t attend meetings or meet the required education sessions, so he just thought it was best to resign,” Board President Marie Shepard said. “He wanted to give somebody else an opportunity. He is an appointed member, so the Board of Aldermen will have to take it up soon.”
McCance was out of town Wednesday and not available for comment.
His son Christian will be leaving Columbia High to complete his junior and senior years at the Mississippi School of the Arts, a prestigious public boarding school in Brookhaven.
McKenzie said aldermen could begin discussions as early as Tuesday, when they meet at 4 p.m. at City Hall. He said he will ask for recommendations and they will discuss them from there. McKenzie said there is no particular timetable because aldermen would need to speak with potential candidates before voting on the issue.
