Carol Davis has been honored as the Columbia School District’s Parent of the Year.
Columbia High Principal Sheila Burbridge praised Davis’s service to the school.
“We don’t have enough time for me to tell you how hard this lady works,” she said. “She gets off her job and comes and helps whenever we call her. When we did some checking, we found out that she didn’t just do this for Columbia High School, she has been an involved parent from primary, elementary, Jefferson and all the way through. Thank you, Carol.”
The March 8 Board of Trustees meeting featured a number of honors and accolades, including Davis’ honor. Nicole Carney was the Jefferson Middle School Parent of the Year, Beth Johnson earned the honor at Columbia Elementary School and Laura Hough was awarded the distinction at Columbia Primary School.
Superintendent Jason Harris gave tribute to Davis as he addressed the group before handing the award.
“In every great community is a great public school system,” he said. “Behind every great school system are those that support the students – the parents. Trying to decide from the four individuals who was going to be the District Teacher of the Year was not easy.”
“I really want to thank everyone,” Davis said as Harris presented her with gifts.
Middle School Principal Raymond Powell spoke about Carney and her service.
“She is a wonderful individual,” he said. “We have two of her children at our school. Mr. (Robert) White (CES principal) told me that I’d want to get her involved. She got involved quickly and she has been awesome. We are very thankful to have her.”
White then added a few words Johnson.
“Every chance I get, I like to brag on my staff,” he said. “They do not always agree on things, but when I asked for nominations for parent of the year, this was unanimous. It was an easy choice. We have so many wonderful parents to choose from, but this lady works tirelessly for this school. I can’t tell you how much we appreciate Beth Johnson.”
CPS Principal Heather Singley spoke about Hough.
“She pretty much volunteered this year right up until she had a baby,” she said. “She does the book fairs, rolls the quarters, she really does a lot. She even donated some of her Christmas decorations to us. We appreciate her and thank her for all that she does.”
The Board also honored the volunteers and teachers who helped bring the recent musical, “Music Man,” to life. Burbridge made individual honors to many involved.
“It was the 40th production,” she said. “If you did not come, you missed a treat. Our musical directors did a great job. They worked every night voluntarily with our students. It was a joy for our students, community and our school. There is no way we could pay you for what you do.”
Gail Curtis, Kim Walley, Stephanie Guidroz, Connie Wood, Melissa Jordan and Ellen Hawkins were honored for their efforts helping with the musical.
