A weeklong celebration in February honored school board members in the Marion County School District.
Board members were acknowledged and received gifts made by students at the Feb. 15 meeting and then enjoyed a breakfast later in the week at the Marion County Carl Loftin Career & Technology Center with select students from all of the District’s schools.
“Feb. 12 through Feb. 16 is considered National School Board Appreciation Week,” Superintendent Wendy Bracey said. “I would like to say thank you to all of our board members. I appreciate there efforts and I appreciate them supporting us and making sure that our school district is run well and that they hold us accountable to do a good job to make sure that we are educating children and loving children and making sure that our children are good and safe.”
The state school board association, MSBA, sent certificates for the Board members, who include: Board President Wendy Hammonds, Richard Culliver, Keith Stuckey, Jessie Graham and Larry Jenkins. Board Attorney Fred Cooper was also honored.
“We celebrated them with a Valentine breakfast at the CTC center,” Bracey said. “Our principals brought students who sat at tables with the Board members and discussed their individual schools. They also enjoyed a real good breakfast.
Jan Sears, director of the Carl Loftin Center brought students from all of the disciplines, who each spoke about their programs and then presented gifts to the Board at the meeting.
“We have 12 programs on our campus and we chose an East or West Marion student that really represented the classes. We are so proud of these students. They are excelling in the classroom and their scholarships are through the roof. The school board and our superintendent have been super supportive of us and I’m just super thankful for that.”
The Marion County School District Board of Education meets at 6 p.m. Monday in regular session at its office on Mississippi 13 North in Columbia.
