Columbia firefighters quickly knocked down flames in a Broad Street home saving it and the contents earlier this week.
At 11:54 a.m. Wednesday, the Columbia Fire Department was dispatched to 1110 Broad St. to a report of an active house fire.
“When we arrived on the scene, there was heavy smoke coming from the structure,” Capt. Tyler Creel said. “The main part of the fire was in the kitchen.”
CFD Chief Jeff McKenzie said Capt. Reggie Crowther and “B Shift” did a great job extinguishing the blaze.
“Our units arrived on the scene and knocked it down quickly,” he said. “It was rolling pretty good at the back of the house when we got there.”
Creel said it took less than 10 minutes for the fire to be extinguished, but units remained on the scene until 1:12 p.m.
“They checked for hot spots,” he said. “We wanted to make sure that the fire didn’t extend into the attic. They made a really good knockdown and saved a lot of the house.”
McKenzie said the residents of the home were able to escape the fire.
“AAA Ambulance Service responded and checked them out at the scene,” he said. “Nobody was transported to the hospital.”
The CFD responded with two engines to the scene. Damage was confined to the kitchen area, according to McKenzie.
“There was fire and water damage in the kitchen area and the back wall of the kitchen,” he said. “The rest of the house had smoke in it. We were able to use fans and get the smoke out.”
Preliminary indications are that the fire was likely caused by an electrical appliance in the kitchen. The investigation is continuing.
