A crash between an 18-wheeler and a pickup truck Jan. 4 could have been much worse.
The accident occurred on U.S. 98 in the eastbound lanes near Woodlawn Church around 6:15 p.m. according to Columbia Police Department Capt. Johnny Barnes.
Barnes said a CPD report said that an 18-wheeler from Southern Tire Mart was eastbound on U.S. 98 and the driver, Andrew Broom of Columbia, stated he saw a pickup truck pull out in front of him from the turning bay, but he could not move over. Broom’s 2015 Freightliner struck a Mississippi Power 2017 Ford F250 pickup truck driven by John Gibson of Sumrall.
The report said that Gibson told police that the truck was in his blind spot and he did not see it as he attempted to pull onto U.S. 98.
The Columbia Fire Department and AAA Ambulance Service were dispatched to the scene, but both drivers refused treatment and were reportedly uninjured.
Police and firefighters cleared the scene after about an hour.
