The coronavirus pandemic has caused havoc everywhere, including in Marion County; however, despite not being able to fundraise as much, work is still happening on the veterans’ monument for City Park.
American Legion Post 90 Commander Bill Harris said on Friday that while everything has slowed down, things are still moving.
One of the big fundraisers they have is purchasing engraved pavers, which will surround the monument. Pavers are still available for purchase, and it is not too late. Harris said if a person has more than one paver and wants the pavers to stay together to clip the orders together.
The original plan to dedicate the monument on July 4 has been delayed, but Harris is hoping to have everything ready for Nov. 7, the Saturday before Veterans Day.
The columns have been ordered and already engraving has begun. The pavers will be ready in August.
The veterans’ monument is being done in honor of all veterans. It does not matter if the veteran fought in any wars. They could have served in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard or National Guard; it is open for all.
The American Legion is about halfway to its fundraising goal, which is $60,000, Harris said. They have sold about 100 pavers so far. Harris said if anyone is interested in purchasing a paver or for more information, he can be reached at (601) 441-1638.
