A Sandy Hook woman will serve a long time behind bars for bringing drugs inside them.
Jasmine Starr Bedwell, 23, was sentenced Tuesday by Judge Tony Mozingo in Marion County Circuit Court to serve seven mandatory years for smuggling a pipe and crystal methamphetamine into the Marion County Jail.
Bedwell will be eligible for release on Feb. 12, 2025, according to Maj. Zach Guidroz of the jail.
“For cellphones in prisons/jails, the sentence can be up to 15 years, but it is not mandatory,” he said. “But drugs being brought into prison carry seven mandatory years. Mississippi takes contraband in prison and jails seriously.”
According to arrest records, Bedwell has a history of drug offenses dating back to March 2016 with an arrest by the Marion County Sheriff’s Office for possession of a Schedule III-V drug, DUI 1st and no proof of insurance. Bedwell was arrested in June 2016 for possession of a controlled substance, a Schedule I-II drug (less than 50 grams) and possession of a controlled substance in the county jail. She was again arrested in January 2017 for introduction of contraband into a correctional facility. In October 2017, she was arrested for contempt of court and in January 2018 for possession/sale of a stolen firearm.
“Marion County will not tolerate the breaching of security of their correctional facility,” Guidroz said.
