Four beautiful ladies recently competed for the title Mother of the Year. The Marion County Branch of the NAACP hosted an evening of Pageantry. Each contestant acquired a sponsor to support them as they generated funds. The lady that raises the largest amount will be crowned Mother of the Year.
This year’s winner is Elaine T. Newsom, sponsored by John The Baptist Church. She was escorted by her husband, Pastor Calvin Newsom. They are the parents of six children and grandparents of eight.

Her talent was reciting “Being the Mother of a Black Child.”
First runner up was Cynthia Williams, sponsored by CARS. She was escorted by her husband, Pastor Jerry Williams. They are the parents of five children, 17 grandchildren and one great grand. She recited “Black Woman” for her talent.
Contestant Delicia Carter, sponsored by Little Rock Baptist Church, was escorted by her son, Jordan Haynes. She is the mother of three children and the grandmother of one. Her talent was a compilation of her favorite quote, scripture Psalms 34:1-3, and song “To God Be The Glory.”
Ki’Lee and Kin’Lee Smith served as the flower girls for the NAACP Mother of the Year contest.
Contestant Jimmie Ree Brown, sponsored by Truevine Baptist Church was escorted by her husband, Deacon Hertis Brown. They are the parents of two children and 18 grandchildren. She recited a poem entitled “Love.”
The evening was highlighted with all contestants wearing navy blue dresses adorned with gold roses for their introduction. They later changed into formal wear for the remainder of the evening. We were entertained with poetry reading by Penny Martin. The farewell scroll was made by the 2023 Mother of the Year, Donnis McGowan. She wore a beautiful white suit adorned with a gold rose. Serving as contestant attendants and flower girls were Ki’Lee and Kin’Lee Smith. Following the Pageant was the queen’s reception.
The Marion County Branch NAACP would like to thank all sponsors, participants, attendees, for supporting this event. Regular monthly meeting is Monday after the third Sunday at 6 p.m.
