Graveside services were held at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 15, 2018, at Brushy Creek Baptist Church Cemetery for Eugene “Gene” Barber, 78, of Columbia, who died on Sunday, May 13, in Hattiesburg. Dr. Joe Wiggins and Bro. Corey Odom officiated at the services. Visitation was held from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Tuesday, May 15, at the Hathorn Funeral Home.
As a lifelong resident of Marion County, he served his nation faithfully as a member of the United States Army. He was an accomplished truck driver and won two state titles while driving for Texaco Trade and Transportation. He loved hunting, fishing and gardening. He was a member of North Columbia Baptist Church and he loved his family and Lord very dearly.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Willie and Dorothy Barber; one son, Glen Barber; two brothers, H.L. Barber and Bro. Donnie Barber, and one grandchild, Ryan Cooper.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Theresia Barber of Columbia; one daughter, Brenda Cooper (Billy Paul) of Columbia; two brothers, Bro. Thomas R. "Bill" Barber (Peggy) and Bro. Douglas Barber (Marilyn), both of Columbia; two grandchildren, Courtney Holland (Chad) and Kelsey Cooper, both of Columbia; five great-grandchildren, Maddi Holland, Makenzie Holland and Cooper Holland, all of Columbia and Levi Cooper of Tylertown and Weston Cooper of Carson, and a number of nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were his nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Building Fund at North Columbia Baptist Church.
