Burial followed in the Cook Family Cemetery in the Edna community. Bro. Kenny Peavey officiated at the services. Visitation was held from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Monday, April 9 at Hathorn Funeral Home.
As a long-time resident of Marion County, she was a graduate and valedictorian of Hub High School. Her first job was with the telephone company as an operator, where she met her husband, Glyn. She spent many years working at East Marion Elementary as a teacher’s aide. She and Glyn also made homes in Gulfport and Jackson.
After retirement, she and Glyn enjoyed camping with the Bellsouth Camping Pioneers for many years. She loved traveling, cooking, and growing up in a family of farmers; she also loved gardening. As were her parents, she was a long-time member of Edna Baptist Church and very fond of her Women’s Sunday school class. She loved spending time with her family and especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Warren Henry and Annie Alice Cook; one son, Glyn B. Porter Jr.; one sister, Emily Cranford; and two brothers, Bill Cook and Charles B. Cook.
Survivors include her husband of 71 years, Glyn B. Porter of Columbia; two daughters, Gloria Parham (George) of Clinton and Lynn P. English (Eddie) of Columbia; one son, Tom Porter (Renee) of Columbia; one sister, Sybil White of Columbia; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were her grandsons, Russell Shaw, Tucker English, Warren English, Adam Porter, Dave Porter and Javan Porter.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made toward the Mission Efforts of Edna Baptist Church.
