Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 13, 2018, at the Lakeview Church of God for Mr. Melvin Laverne Johnson, 79, of Columbia, who passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 10, at his residence. Burial followed in Woodlawn Cemetery. Rev. A.D. Gammill officiated at the services. Visitation was held from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. on Thursday, April 12 at the Hathorn Funeral Home.
As a long-time resident of Marion County, he served our nation faithfully as a member of the United States Army. He loved visiting with friends and family. As a long-time devoted member of the Lakeview Church of God, he loved sharing God’s word as teacher of various Bible study classes within the church. He also enjoyed working in his yard and with his roses.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Archie Melvin and Maggie E. Johnson; wife of 50 years, Anita Johnson; one brother, Donald Johnson, and two sisters, Jean Barefoot and Betty Singley.
Survivors include his daughter, Kandee Johnson Harwood (Rodney) of Sand Springs, Okla.; one son, Kevin Laverne Johnson (Carla) of Hernando; Jimmy Dale Broom of Columbia; one sister-in-law, Ginger Lee of Wiggins; seven grandchildren, Brian Christopher Broom of Mannford, Okla., Michael Eric Broom of Columbia, Harrison Taylor Johnson of Hernando, Isabella Rae Johnson of Hernando, Crystel Brasuell of Gore, Okla., Rodney M. Harwood Jr. of Gore, Okla., and Brooklyn David of Tulsa, Okla.; five great-grandchildren, Ryann Elizabeth Broom, Kaden Christopher Broom, James Brasuell IV, Gentrie Grace Brasuell and Lane Remington Harwood, and a number of nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Brian C. Broom, Michael E. Broom, Harrison Taylor Johnson, David Lowery, Brydon Terrell and Jeff Regan.
