Graveside service were held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2024, in Woodlawn Cemetery for Sonya Christelle Bennett, 86, of Columbia, who passed away on Saturday, Oct. 5. Rev. Tommy Stogner officiated at the services.
She lived a beautiful life of 86 years. She devoted her love and time to her family. She was the biggest cheerleader for her grandchildren, supporting all different kinds of sports and activities. She was a very talented singer, writer and poet who also enjoyed reading. She dedicated more than 40 years employed with Marion General Hospital. She was also a longtime member of North Columbia Baptist Church. She will be greatly missed by all who loved and knew her.
She was preceded in death by her father, Guy M. Powell; mother, Myrtis Crawley Height; one son, Anthony “Tony” Bennett; and ex-husband and lifetime friend, Alton Bennett.
Survivors include her daughter, Pam Ball; one sister, Sandra Alderman (Bart); one grandchild, Kimberly Abercrombie (Wade); and three great-grandchildren, Landon McNabb, Tate Abercrombie and Matthew Abercrombie.
Pallbearers were Landon McNabb, Wade Abercrombie, Matthew Abercrombie, Steve Crawley, Greg Weatherford and Huey Hitt. Honorary pallbearer was Tate Abercrombie.
