Funeral services were conducted at 4 p.m. on Friday, May 31, 2024, at North Columbia Baptist Church for Vera Y. Broome, 82, of Columbia, who passed away on Monday, May 27, at her residence. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery. Rev. Tommy Stogner will officiate at the services. Visitation was held from 2 p.m. until the time of the services on Friday, May 31, at North Columbia Baptist Church.
She worked for more than 30 years at Jefferson Middle School where she retired as cafeteria manager. She was a longtime member of North Columbia Baptist Church and head of the church Hostess Committee. For many years, she gave all of herself to ensure her church family felt loved when occasions arose involving fellowship over a meal. She was also blessed with a green thumb. She enjoyed gardening and growing her flowers that were often enjoyed by her family and friends. She will be missed and remembered as a kind and sweet-mannered lady who would help others in any way she could.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James I. Broome Sr.; son, James I. Broome Jr.; parents, Burley V. Young Sr. and Nannie Mae Hunnicut Young; brothers, Burley V. Young Jr., Hudson Young and Curtis Young Sr.; cousins, Sadie Y. Rogers, Linda Y. Harger and Curtis Young Jr.
Survivors include her nephews, Bryan Harger (Mary Ann) of Moss Point and Derek Daigle of Dahlonega, Ga.; nieces, Charlotte Hibley (Duane) of Columbia and Darlene Griffin (Beau) of Fairhope, Ala.; a host of great-nieces and great-nephews; and special friends, Gilbert and Cheryl Jacobs and Charles Rogers Sr.
Pallbearers were Tony Wilks, Duane Hibley, Gilbert Jacobs, Craig Little, Jeff Bass and Patrick Haynes.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to North Columbia Baptist Church.
