Voting was dismal at best in the Republican alderman-at-large run-off election Tuesday night. Less than 15% of the city’s voters participated in the election. However, it was still enough for Andrea Porter to win the Republican ticket.
“I want to thank all the supporters and everyone who came out. I have definitely been active in seeking votes and plan to keep my boots on the ground if elected,” Porter said, after finding out she was the unofficial winner of the run-off.
Porter had faced former Mayor Reed Houston in the run-off. With less than 500 voters casting ballots, the unofficial count was Porter receiving 247 votes, compared to Houston’s 239. Only eight votes separated the two candidates.
In June’s general election, Porter will face Democrat Gwendolyn Hammond with the winner of that race determining the new alderwoman-at-large for the city. The current alderman-at-large, Edward Hough, chose not to seek reelection.
The only other race to be decided in the general election will be for alderman of Ward 4. Democrat Brian Foxworth is challenging Republican incumbent Mike Smith.
At the primary election April 6, Republican incumbent Jason Stringer defeated Republican Laurie Sturdivant Harvey for alderman of Ward 2, and Democrat incumbent Anna Evans defeated Democrat Renee Galloway for alderwoman for Ward 3.
The general election will be held on June 8.
