Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, March 14, 2018, at Hathorn Funeral Home for James Earl Smith Sr., 66, of Columbia, who passed away on Monday, March 12, in Hattiesburg. Burial followed in Good Hope Baptist Church Cemetery. Bro. Tim Morrison and Bro. Jessie Ladner officiated at the services. Visitation was held from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. on Tuesday, March 13, at Hathorn Funeral Home.
A native of Marion County, he was retired as a tool pusher from Griner Drilling Service. He was a friend to everyone that he met. He loved to go camping, fishing and spending time with family and friends. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He served in the United States Army.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy Powell Smith; sister, Jacqual Ann Smith, and son, Gary Wayne Smith.
Survivors include his wife of over 47 years, Charlotte McAllister Smith; six children, Mary Ann Reid (Mike) of Lumberton and James Earl Smith Jr. (Lisa), Sandy Jones (Jamie), Tracey McNeese (Chris), Amanda Miller (Jimmy) and Jennifer Jones (Robert), all of Columbia; father, Donquie Smith; five sisters, Linda Sue Sanders (Willie), Nettie Jane Sones (Luke), Katherine Beach (Rodger Dale) and Patsy Sanders (Randy), all of Columbia and Rosemary Robbins (Raymond) of Lumberton; 13 grandchildren, Joshua Reid, Kayla Smith, Tyler Smith, Eli Jones, Nicholas Jones, Oliver Jones, Trace McNeese, Tyler Miller, Hayley Miller, Hayden Miller, Caleb Jones, Noah Jones and Tripp Jones, and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Pallbearers were Donnie Sanders, Danny Sanders, Eli Jones, Hayden Miller, Brad Beach, Michael Beach, Troy Hingle and Jimmy Miller.
Hathorn Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
