Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 27, 2017, at Hulett-Winstead Funeral Home in Hattiesburg for Lounell Caughman Morris, 85, of Hattiesburg, who passed away peacefully while surrounded by her loved ones on Wednesday, Nov.22, in Hattiesburg. Burial followed in Highland Cemetery. Visitation was held from 11 a.m. until the time of the services on Monday, Nov. 27.
She was born on April 19, 1932, in Silver Creek. She loved traveling the surrounding area with her daddy’s rolling grocery store, Caughman’s Rolling Store. As an only child, she was the apple of her daddy’s eye.
She was voted Miss Silver Creek High, was a class officer for three years and lettered as a member of the basketball team. Upon graduation, she attended Mississippi College where she received her Secondary Permanent Professional Teaching License. While at Mississippi College, she was named a campus beauty.
One weekend, she and a group of friends offered a ride back to Mississippi College to a handsome hitchhiker named Ralph Morris. Upon returning to campus, Ralph invited her for a Coke and thus their courtship began. They were married on April 20, 1952, in Silver Creek. Their marriage spanned 64 years and was a true testament to a lasting love story. Ralph nicknamed Lounell “Tweet,” and Lounell referred to him as “Tweet Tweet,” and they used those names for each other throughout their marriage.
She worked at the Bank of Columbia for the first several years of their marriage. In 1969, she moved with her family to Hattiesburg.
She was a true Southern lady. She was an active member at First Baptist Church Columbia and later, First Baptist Church Hattiesburg. She taught numerous Sunday school classes with Ralph. She was active in the Hattiesburg Morning Garden Club and Veleeta Club where she served as a committee member and as an officer of both. Her most treasured social activity was her “Wednesday Afternoon Coffee Drinking Club” where she spent time weekly with wonderful friends.
Lounell’s greatest joy was time spent with her family, in person and by telephone. She loved to cook and was a master in the kitchen cooking everything from meats to casseroles, vegetables and desserts.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Ralph Morris, and parents, D.W. Caughman and Odell Purvis Caughman.
Survivors include her four daughters, Susan Williams (Neal), Miriam Seale and Carolyn Liddell (Hal) all of Hattiesburg, and Melissa Martens (Will) of Birmingham, Ala.; 11 grandchildren, Trey Williams, Cory Williams, Susan Neal Williams, Caitlin Seale, Elise Seale, Laura Liddell Nolen, Morris Liddell, Thompson Liddell, Brannan Martens, Mimi Martens and Maci Martens, and eight great-grandchildren.
