Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 29, 2017, at First United Methodist Church of Columbia for Thomas Carter Griffith, 73, of Columbia, who died on Thursday, July 27, at his residence. Interment followed in Columbia City Cemetery. Bro. Keith Gaughf officiated at the services. Visitation was held from 10:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 29, at First United Methodist Church of Columbia.
He was an Eagle Scout, served in the United States Army and was a graduate of Mississippi State University with a degree in mechanical engineering. He was the owner of Tom Griffith Well Service and was previously employed by Pearl River Valley Electric Company and Columbia Bank (Trustmark Bank). He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church where he previously served as president of the Men’s Bible Class and Chairman of the Finance Committee. He also served the church in many other capacities. He was an active member of the community where he served as past president of the Columbia Rotary Club, Marion County Jaycees and Mississippi Ground Water Association. He enjoyed flying, golfing, fishing, horseback riding and family time.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ray Randolph Griffith Jr. and Kathleen Callicott Griffith.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Judy Webb Griffith of Columbia; one daughter, Shelley Griffith Putnam (Donald J.) of Columbia; one son, Guy Marshall Griffith (Ellen) of Picayune; one brother, Harry C. Griffith of Columbia; mother-in-law, Nioma Webb of Columbia; four grandchildren, Kaelin Putnam Vegas of Mandeville, La., Nathaniel Putnam, Devin Griffith and Damon Griffith, all of Columbia and one great-grandchild, Margaux Vegas of Mandeville, La.
Pallbearers were Jimmy Bourne, David Coke, Dan Duncan, Hugh Lokey, Jerry Rowzee, Gary Smyly and Tommy Ward. Honorary pallbearers were the Columbia High School Class of 1962 and their spouses and the Men's Bible Class of First United Methodist Church of Columbia.
