The Duckworth 10u all-star squad’s season may have come to an end after some lopsided results, but its focus was never on the scoreboard.
“We had a lot of 9 year olds on the team, and a lot of them it was their first year playing. It was a learning experience,” coach Larry Jenkins said. “We’re thinking next year we can turn it around, lay a foundation and be a ball club.”
Duckworth played just two games in the district tournament at Dean Griner this past weekend and lost to Pearl River Central 18-5 and Poplarville 14-0, eliminating it from any further postseason play.
However, the majority of the team will be back next year in the same age group with an extra year of experience under its belt.
“I’m proud of the kids because they didn’t quit even though they were getting beat. They hung in there. I think we only have two kids who will be moving up to the 11’s, so most of them will be coming back,” Jenkins said. “We don’t use anything as an excuse and give it our best effort.”
