After helplessly watching the Pearl River rise, flooded Marion County residents are now seeing it recede, although the slow drop has delayed homeowners and emergency personnel from getting in to assess the damage.

Monday, Feb. 24 flood update: Shelter remains open

A Red Cross shelter at New Life Fellowship Church on Eagle Day Avenue is up and running and ready to assist flood victims.

According to Angela McLaughlin with the Red Cross, currently one person is staying at the shelter, but they have been feeding people affected by flood.

Red Cross Shelter now open for flood victims

The American Red Cross has set up a shelter at New Life Church on Eagle Day Avenue for people whose homes have been affected by the rising flood waters. At 1:15 p.m. today the Pearl River was at 25.13 feet and still expected to crest sometime on Sunday at 25.5 feet.

Project aims to control flash flooding downtown

Columbia is ready to begin taking bids for Phase 1 of downtown storm sewer improvements, with a goal of relieving the risk of flash flooding.

The Mississippi Legislature has earmarked $500,000 to pay for the first phase.
